Your Consultation

What to expect during your consultation

Your initial appointment will usually last up to 1 hour (up to 1.15 for the integrated approach) and will include a detailed case history, examination, diagnosis and treatment.

Case History

A detailed history will be taken where you will be asked detailed questions about your symptoms. You will also be asked about your medical history, any medication or supplements you may be taking, as well as your general health and lifestyle. This will help generate a “holistic” picture of your personal case and allow to identify not only the specific root cause of your symptoms but also the possible predisposing and maintaining factors.

If you have any relevant material e.g. previous diagnosis/test results, X-rays, M.R.I. scans or current medication, or doctor referral letters it would be helpful to bring copies along to your first consultation.

Examination

A full structural and functional examination will be conducted, to enable full assessment of the area and the extent of the injury. Simple orthopedic tests and, if necessary, blood pressure checks may be carried out to establish the correct diagnosis.

These will include a series of gentle movements to assess mobility , strength and flexibility and identify any restrictions or weaknesses or imbalances. I will assess your mobility as well as flexibility postural imbalances and breathing. It may be necessary for you to take off items of clothing for examination and treatment, so please wear underwear you will feel comfortable in or bring shorts and comfortable gym clothing. Your privacy will of course be respected at all times.

Diagnosis

Once an assessment has been made an explanation for your symptoms will be given along with treatment options. Your diagnosis and plan of treatment will be discussed with you fully and agreed before treatment commences. You will also be given an approximate guide as to the number of treatments you may need. If other further detailed examination is necessary, or a referral to an appropriate professional this will be discussed with you. We will answer any questions of concern you may have about the diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment

The aim of the treatment is to relieve your pain and other symptoms. This will include treating your specific complaint as well as addressing any underlying causes. The treatment will include osteopathic techniques to ease the pain, tension and stiffness in the soft tissues and joints of the body. Western medical acupuncture , taping , breathing retraining, yoga exercises and nutritional and prescription of complex homeopathic remedies are also available when appropriate and with consent of the patient.

Aftercare

Patients may experience a little discomfort after treatment for up to 48 hours. By following simple aftercare advice you should be able to ease any irritation. Aftercare includes techniques such as hot and cold therapy as well as exercise plans. Lifestyle advice along with postural and exercise techniques will be given at the end of your treatment. This may prove invaluable in managing your complaints.
